Movie Review – Were the World Mine

Every once in a while we get movies with the initiative to address gay rights and acceptance. It is still but a dream, however, when we get to live in a world where homosexuals and heterosexuals live together in harmony.

This fanciful idea of turning the whole world gay is the premise of the 2009 movie Were the World Mine. Timothy (Tanner Cohen) is a high school senior who is unfortunately forced to put up with a confused mother (Judy McLane) and a close-minded school in a horrendously homophobic town. When he is cast as Puck in their senior play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream he receives an enchanted copy of the book where he finds a love potion recipe. With this potion, he sets off making everyone and anyone he knows gay, including his jock-crush Jonathon (Nathaniel David Becker), forcing them to walk in his shoes for a change.

The movie is adorned with mesmerizing musical sequences that contain lines from the Shakespearean play. It is a real visual delight. The story itself, however, could have been better. There were a lot of dead air in the movie, as well as several thoughts that could have been expounded for greater depth, like Timothy’s relationship with his parents and the weird magical happenstance of a love potion recipe hidden in a book.

The rousing performance that followed that, however, is perhaps the centerpiece of the whole movie when the cast performs the titular song, Were the World Mine. In it Timothy sings lines from the play in a spectacular dream sequence. Fairies and all.

It is perhaps not the best movie to use to illustrate gay acceptance in the country, but it’s almost there. The magic and the campiness just kinda throws it off from reality, but as a musical one shot about the essence of love and its boundlessness, Were the World Mine is enchanting and spectacular.

Oh gosh, I’ve been gone for a long time again even after I promised not to be. Oh well, that makes two New Year’s resolutions broken.

Anyway, I’d like to share this cool website GuitarTutee.com which doesn’t have guitar tutorials as you might have guessed but chords from popular songs. Unlike submissions from Ultimate-Guitar.com however, the site also posts videos which goes with the chords so one can learn to play it the cool way.

“The idea evolved middle of this year(2007), when most of our tutees (yes, we are guitar teachers) seemed to be uninterested in the basics of music and guitar-playing and would rather jump into playing their favorite songs immediately.”
I think it’s a fantastic site for those who know the basics of guitar playing but just can’t get the rhythmical strumming patterns for today’s hit songs.

Here are some of their videos:

I have plans of taking summer classes this year and with that came plans of getting a job on the side. My friend Mara was talking about how she used to sell shirts so I thought, hey that’s not a bad idea! Besides, I like to design shirts just for kicks.

So I’m excited to unveil my (possible) shirt designs for my future line of shirts FanWare 1.0. Here they are:

You know what’s better than watching Lady Gaga on Youtube?

Watching 25 different frames of the same Lady Gaga video in different time delays in a trippy, nauseating video wall.

That’s what the website Yooouuutuuube.com helps you achieve, an ingenious work by programmer David Kraftsow. It takes any Youtube video, arranges it into multiple rows and columns, as many as you desire, and creates a “mosaic” as each of the tiny boxes play unsimultaneously.

If you’re not sure how it works, then try it out for yourself. IT’S TRIPPY.

Here’s a no-brainer for FOX: Glee gets second season, will hold open auditions

Us fans have been waiting for what seems like ages for the back 9 of the hit show Glee. We’re not getting that just yet, but here is some fantastic news from the makers of our favorite show: Glee got picked up for a second season.

Surprised? I didn’t think so (though I suggest no matter you how you react, sing in a low, modulated voice to avoid people staring).  Glee has been a huge cash cow for Fox, it’s had consistently good ratings and a lot of big name artists down with it so it’s not a big shocker that the network wants more. It’s also had numerous nominations and a PCA win on its book, with only 13 episodes so far.

Jonathan Groff in Spring Awakening, with Glee star Lea Michele

On the back 9 we are expecting Idina Menzel and returning is Kristin Chenoweth, both of Wicked fame, and musical legend Olivia Newton-John. Add to that a whole episode of Madonna, another episode of original songs, Jane Lynch finally performing and an appearance by Jonathan Groff and it looks like we have a spring winner.

And if that’s not enough, musically endowed Gleeks will be excited to know that the producers will be holding open audition for three new characters to be added to the second season. The American Idol-esque search will be part of a   special opening up to season 2. Fantasmic! The producers look like they have it all figured out.

Glee returns with all-new episodes on Tuesday, April 13 (9-10PM ET/PT) on FOX.
